Sukkot
backforwardplay
Daniel Bergmann, left, and his son Abraham, right, read in their 'Sukkot' in Zurich, Switzerland, pictured on October 2, 2007. Sukkot is a Jewish pilgrimage festival. Sukkot means 'booth' or 'hut' and refers to the temporary dwellings of the ancient Isrealites during their 40 years of wandering in the desert after the exodus from Egypt. The booth is made of natural materials and is built in the garden, in the courtyard or on the balcony. The believer should make an effort to live in the hut during the seven to eight day festival in autumn, including eating, praying, celebrating and sleeping. The festival is intended to reflect God's benevolence in providing all the Jew's needs in the desert. (KEYSTONE/Alessandro Della Bella)
